1) WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE THE LORDS SUPPER?

COMMENT #2:

Referring to Acts 20:7-11 it seems Paul broke bread on the first day of the week (vs. 7), then again after midnight (vs. 11). I do agree with the taking on the first day of the week but what about at other times?

Acts 20:11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

CLARIFICATION #2:

You have asked a question dealing with bible authority. If you will read these scriptures Acts 2:42 Acts 20:7 1Cor. 10:16-21 1Cor. 11:17-34 you will learn from these passages. (1). Disciples, members of the church, are commanded to eat the Lord's Supper. (2). After the establishment of the church, the disciples ate the Lord's Supper on the first day of each week. (3). The disciples were commanded to eat and drink in memory of Christ, showing his death, discerning His body.

Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

1Co. 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.  21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

1Co. 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. 34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

Now read Matthew 26:26-28 Mark 14:22-26 Luke 22:14-20 We learn from these passages (1). Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper. (2). The Lord's Supper was instituted on the night in which Jesus was betrayed. (3). The elements of the Lord's Supper were bread and fruit of the vine. (4). Jesus gave thanks before the bread was eaten, and again before the apostles drank the fruit of the vine. (5). Jesus promised to eat the bread and drink the fruit of the vine again with the apostles after the kingdom was established. In Acts 20:7 "Upon The First Day Of The Week" They had met at Troas or gathered "Together To Break Bread" on "The First Day Of The Week" To Break Bread is from the Greek "klasai arton" which is the same as in Acts 2:42 This is used for the Lord's Supper so we have the purpose of their gathering together on the first day of the week. Paul was present and "Discoursed With Them" purposing to leave Troas on the following day. Skipping down to V-11 What is meant a common meal or the Lord's Supper? If this was the Lord's Supper, and if they counted the day from midnight to midnight as we count it, then they ate the Lord's Supper on Monday; if they did that they did not do what they met to do on the first day of the week; again, if this was the Lord's Supper, and if they began counting time from sunset to sunset, then they ate the Lord's Supper on the first day of the week. If this does not refer to the Lord's Supper it refers to a common meal; this would mean that they already had eaten the Lord's Supper, and now, since there had been an interruption in Paul's discourse by the falling of Eutychus V-9 Paul took nourishment and continued his speech. It seems better to conclude that this was not the Lord's Supper, but that it was a common meal which Paul ate in preparation for his expected departure. Notice this is mentioned with particular reference to Paul, not to the worshipping company, so the  conclusion would be that the Lord's Supper had been observed at an earlier period of the meeting, and therefore on the first day of the week, as they had met for that purpose on that day. We are only authorized to eat of the Lord's Supper on the First Day Of Each Week. If you would like to study with me the topic of Bible Authority I would be more than happy to answer any questions that you might have. Thank you for your question.

Mt. 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Mrk. 14:22  And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Lu 22:14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
