Comments From Others - Can musical instruments be used in Church services?

COMMENT#6:

I am a “non instrementalist”  attending an instremental church. Who will cast the first stone?

CLARIFICATION #6:

I assume by your comment you admit it’s sinful to use instrument in service to God. The scripture you quoted goes on to say, “sin no more”.

Since you know it is sinful to use musical instrument, I’ll concentrate on the dangerous state you are in. You see you are now sinning willfully.

Heb 10:26  For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Without repenting you will be guilty of the sin unto death, which is a sin not repented of.

1 Jo 5:16 If any man sees his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
Ro 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

This is not something to take lightly. It is transgressing the law of God, which is sin. You must stop sinning willfully and that means to repent. Yes we all sin, but we must turn away from the sin and ask for forgiveness.  Through the grace and mercy of God we will receive remission of our sins, but only if we repent and only if we ask. This is how we submit ourselves to God’s will. If you need help finding a sound church in your area we would be happy to help.

would you please send me the book, chapter, and verse to show that music is sinful in worship.

CLARIFICATION TO REPLY #1:

Instrumental music in worship service was added in 600 A.D., thus making it a tradition of man. You find me one verse in the New Testament authorizing the use of musical instruments. If it’s not been commanded then it is going beyond the Law.

Matthew 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
Matthew 15:6 And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
Mark 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition
Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
1 Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
1 Timothy 4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee
1 Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
Re 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

This is what God did command .

Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Acts 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Hebrews 2:12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
James 5:13  Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

REPLY #2 FOR COMMENT: #6 :

many of the verses were Jesus speaking of the Old Law of Moses. But if you lump music in as not commanded, add church busses, Wednesday night bible study, board of trustees, Ect, ect.?

CLARIFICATION TO REPLY #2:

There’s no denying the New Testament commandment is to sing and make melody in your heart. You must understand the commandment giving us authority to allow expediencies (aids in which to fulfill a command).

1 Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
1 Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

This gives us authority to use an expedient, but it must only be used to help fulfill a commandment and it must be lawful first, (“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient”) this means not to add or remove from the law. To add another sound, other than singing is going beyond the commandment and is not an acceptable expedient. The song leader is an acceptable expedient so long as he is sing with one another and not a sole. The difference between adding music from midweek study is music is adding or changing God commandment to sing. Midweek study is not changing or adding to what God had command. If the Lord Supper were offered on any gathering other than the 1st day of the week then it would be adding to God's commandment and would be unlawful.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Things such as electricity is not only required by mans law in order to have a building, it also helps us to fulfill commands which require us to see (read, sing, partake the Lord supper, etc.) Speaking of having a building this is an expedient for us to come together and this is why we don’t have bingos, pot luck dinners, birthday parties, etc., which is accepted by most denominations which do not know how to interpret Gods word in allowing an expedient. Not only do we have a command explaining the rules for expedients, we also have examples. We use a microphone to make hearing a sermon possible.  I think it falls in the same category as sitting on a rock or climbing up a tree as Zacchaeus did.

Luke 19:4  And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

Christ once used a ship as an aid when speaking to a crowd.

Matthew 13:2  And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

The next thing you must understand is the different between general and specific commands. God commanded Noah to build the ark of gopher wood. By specifying “Gopher” God eliminated all other kinds of wood

Gen. 6:14  Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

God’s command to sing excludes any other kind of music. There are only two kinds of music, vocal and instrumental. God has specified vocal.  God Specified making melody in the heart.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

The next thing you must understand is to respect the silence of the scriptures. Here is an examples of how we respect the silence of the scriptures, “Mom sends me to the store to buy milk & eggs. I come home with milk, eggs, and candy. You did not tell me not to buy candy, I did not have to because I specifically told you to buy milk & eggs.” When God specifies a thing like singing there is no need for Him to say, “Now do not use the instruments.
